L'étrange figure que fait l'Eglise avec son probabilisme !

Quoi! cette autorité instituée d'en haut, cette fille du Père des lumières, est réduite, en ce qui intéresse le plus l humanité, la Justice et la morale, à des probabilités!

Il est vrai que les catholiques prudents, comme le candide Bergier, s'efforcent de relever le probabilisme en lui imposant pour condition de réunir le plus grand nombre d'autorités possible. Mais c'est précisément ce qui choque le plus la science, et qui témoigne du désarroi de l'Eglise et de la desertion du Saint-Esprit. Dans la science, if n'y a, en fait de certitude, ni majorité, ni minorité. L'expérience prouve que l'opinion la moins probable, c'est à dire suivant la méthode de l'Eglise, la moins appuyée, est sou- vant la plus vraie. Qu'eût fait Copernic, s'il avait suivi 1 opinion probable? Où en serait I optique, si les savants avaient continué de suivre, sur l'autorité de Newton, le système de l'émission, et de repousser celui de Descartes ; s'ils s'étaient obstinés à admettre sept couleurs primitives' tandis qu'il y en a, dit-on, seulement trois? Que diriez- vous vous-même, monseigneur, si nous autres révolutionnaires nous n'avions à substituer à votre probabilisme que des probabilités ? Que penseriez-vous d'une Justice probable, d une liberté probable, d'un progrès probable?

Bergier se fâche contre Pascal, qui aurait, suivant lui. confondu malicieusement le bon probabilisme et le mauvais probabilisme, pour en écraser les jésuites.

Je n'ai pas besoin de répéter que Pascal avait souverainement raison ; qu'en fait de morale, comme de science, le probabilisme est nul de sa nature; qu'il ne peut servir qu'a dévoiler l'ineptie des théologiens et la défaillance de la loi. Mais Pascal a son tour était inconséquent de ne pas s apercevoir que, lorsqu'il transperçait ces malheureux ca- smstes, il coulait bas toute l'Eglise. L'historien du Port- Royal, M. Sainte-Beuve, l'a parfaitement vu.

What! This established authority from above, the daughter of the Father of light, is reduced, in what concerns humanity most highly, Justice and morality, to probabilities!

It is true that cautious Catholics, as the Bergier candid, striving to raise the probabilism by imposing conditions to meet as many authorities as possible. But this is precisely what the most shocking science, and attests to the dismay of the Church and the desertion of the Holy Spirit. In science, there is, in fact certainty, neither majority nor minority. Experience shows that the opinion less likely, in other words, according to the method of the Church, the less support, is penny before the truer. What would Copernicus have done, if he had followed the probable opinion? Where would the mind, if scientists had continued to follow, on the authority of Newton, the system of emanation, and repel that of Descartes; if they had been obstinate to admit seven primary colors, while there are said to be only three? What would you yourself say, my lord, if we revolutionaries had nothing with which to replace your probabilism other than probability? What must you think of a probable Justice, a probable freedom, a probable progress?

Bergier takes to task Pascal, who had, according to him, maliciously confused good probabilism and bad probabilism, in order to crush the Jesuits.

I need not repeat that Pascal was supremely correct; that in matters of morality as well as of science, probabilism is null by nature; that it may only serve to reveal the ineptitude of theologians and failure of faith. But Pascal in turn was inconsistent not realize that when these unfortunate casuists were transfixed, the whole Church sank. The historian of Port-Royal, M. Sainte-Beuve, has seen this perfectly.
